Long Beach Pride and LA Pride will both hold virtual celebrations this year — with the former this weekend — even as coronavirus restrictions in Los Angeles County have eased in recent weeks. Elsa Martinez, president of Long Beach Pride, said in a phone interview that her team took a wait-and-see approach but had to make a decision by early April, at which point it was still unclear if coronavirus transmission rates would continue to fall — and large events were still prohibited. Noah Gonzalez, the vice president of the board of directors for Christopher Street West, the nonprofit behind LA Pride, shared a similar sentiment.

There was the usual assortment of participants ranging from flamboyant drag queens to sober-looking activists carrying signs advocating homosexual rights and the rights of AIDS patients.
